May 21 - Day of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Belarus

Today, May 21, is a day of solidarity with political prisoners in Belarus

Since Belarus 2020 presidential elections, more than 45,000 civilians have been imprisoned. This is the highest figure in Europe since World War II.

As of today, more than 1,500 people have been recognized as political prisoners, 206 are women WOMEN POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BELARUS (belaruswomen.org)

In fact, the number of people who are actually being politicaly persecuted and wrongfully detained is substantially higher:

as per 21.05.23
4.649 - persecuted politicaly motivated cases under Criminal Code (incl. 965 women, 7 minors; 16 people have been sent for compulsory psychiatric treatment!) Information about persecutions — Dissidentby

39.978 - - persecuted politicaly motivated cases under Administative Code

The attitude towards political prisoners in Belarusian prisons is particularly cruel. People are thrown into prison for leaving a comment on social media, for taking part in peaceful protests in 2020, for wearing clothes in national colors which are white and red, for providing help to political prisoners or Belarus volunteers in Ukraine, for any action that is considered legitimate in any democratic country.

Mass torture continues in Belarusian prisons: people are brutally beaten, tortured with cold, do not provide or provide minimal medical aid, people are unreasonably placed in single punishment cells, where they alone in a cold cell for many months.

Political prisoners practically do not receive any letters, relatives and lawyers are denied any information about their state of health and overall condition for many months. Mothers and fathers are in prisons, not knowing the destiny of their children.

To stop all the lawlessness that is happening in our country, the Belarusian Women's Foundation continues to work in two directions:

1)  Opening of a criminal case against a citizen of the Republic of Belarus Lukashenko, who seized power by force. Our fund has been collecting testimonies of victims for many months and filed a claim to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.  Project "Road to The Hague" (belaruswomen.org)

2)  The announcement of an ultimatum to Luksahenko by European countries demanding the immediate release of all political prisoners, otherwise the railway trade between Belarus and the EU must stop. Urgent Appeal: Collective Ultimatum to Lukashenka! (belaruswomen.org)

We continue to fight for all citizens of our beloved Belarus, so they can hug their relatives and friends as soon as possible!

WOMEN POLITICAL PRISONERS IN BELARUS (belaruswomen.org)

(belaruswomen.org)
